Congratulations to the Stark Reading Contest Winners at Vidor High School
ORANGE, Texas, February 13, 2012 – The Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation congratulates the students of Vidor High School that participated in the Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation. On Tuesday, February 7, 2012,Â students took part in the local level contest at the high school auditorium.Â Julian VanDevender and Gavin Powell were named first place and second place winners in declamation, and Kinnedy Mitchell and Nikole Evans were first and second place winners in the interpretive reading. Powell and Evans each received $1,500 in scholarships. VanDevender took first place in declamation with Address on the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster by Ronald Reagan. Mitchell won first place in interpretive reading with her reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart. Both received $2,000 in scholarships and will go on to compete in the County Wide Contest at Lutcher Theater on April 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.Â
The aim of the Stark Reading Contest is to enhance the literary and forensic quality and skills of the students. The Contest has continued annually since its inception in 1904 and offers educational opportunities and experiences for students at Orange County public schools. The Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation is sponsored by the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation as part of its continuing mission to enrich the community and encourage education.
